Singapore Swifties, rejoice! Taylor Swift has won a grant to perform in the city-state next month.
The 34-year-old American pop megastar will perform six sold-out shows in the island nation, his only stop in Southeast Asia, in March, government officials said.
The highly anticipated show will be a potential boon to the economy.
The Singapore Tourism Board and the Ministry of Culture did not disclose the amount of the grant, but in a statement on Tuesday they cited the economic benefits that Swift’s popularity brings from concerts around the world.
The ministry said it worked with concert promoter AEG Presents to make Swift’s performance in Singapore a reality.
“As in other cities where Taylor Swift has performed, it is likely to bring significant benefits to Singapore’s economy, particularly tourism activities such as hospitality, retail, travel and dining,” they said.
Concerts have been booming in Singapore since the end of the pandemic lockdown, with big names such as Blackpink, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran performing to sold-out performances.
Thai Prime Minister Sureta Thabisin told a business forum on Friday that Singapore paid Swift 100 million baht (A$4.2 million) per show, with the condition that Singapore would be her only show in Southeast Asia.
Although the Singaporean government has not commented on the exclusivity clause, AEG has announced that Swift’s only concert venue in Southeast Asia will be in Singapore, with VIP tickets priced at S$1,228 (A$1,395).
On the wider Asian continent, Swift also performed in Tokyo in early February.
Her Singapore concert will be held from March 2nd to March 9th.
More than 300,000 tickets were sold to fans who lined up all night in the intense tropical heat.
AEG Presents could not be reached for comment.
