Italy has been increasing the installation of solar power generation in recent years. PV Tech Premium Italy reported last year that it could install around 4GW of solar power, up from 2.4GW in 2022. The main reason for the increase in solar power installations in Italy can be explained by the 110% super bonus scheme that supports the installation of solar panels on homes. Market and battery storage implementation.
Italy’s energy sector generated record amounts of electricity from both solar and wind power in 2023, producing 30.6 TWh and 23.4 TWh of electricity respectively, according to Italian grid operator Terna.
Terna also reported that in 2023, Italy’s solar power sector recorded 10.6% more electricity generation compared to the previous year, while the wind power sector also grew by 15.1%. This contrasts with the decline in fossil fuel electricity generation in Italy, where energy generated from thermal sources fell by 17.4% year-on-year and coal-fired power generation fell by 41.7%.
