Tesla will recall 1.6 million vehicles in China to fix a problem with its Autopilot driver assistance system and reduce the risk of crashes, Chinese regulators said Friday.

A statement from China’s top market regulator, the State Administration for Market Regulation, said the issue could be fixed through an over-the-air software update.

of The Autopilot recall affects 1.61 million Tesla (TSLA) vehicles in the company’s second-largest market, including imported Model S, Model X, and Model 3 sedans, as well as Chinese-made This includes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV.of The vehicle was manufactured between August 26, 2014 and December 20, 2023.

Drivers can “misuse” the Autopilot feature in these vehicles, potentially increasing the risk of crashes, regulators said in a statement.

Tesla added that it plans to update the software systems in these vehicles, including adding controls and warnings to “further encourage drivers to comply with their driving responsibilities.”

The second recall covers 7,538 imported Model S sedans and Model X SUVs. There is a risk that the doors could unlatch and open in the event of a crash, the regulator said in a statement. These vehicles were manufactured from October 26, 2022 to November 16, 2023.

The Autopilot recall follows similar moves in the United States. Last month, Tesla recalled nearly all of its 2 million vehicles on U.S. roads, restricting their use. This feature was created following an investigation of approximately 1,000 crashes by U.S. regulators.

Autopilot’s limitations are a blow to Tesla’s efforts to market its cars to buyers willing to pay extra to have their cars do the driving for them.
