These cars reportedly have issues with auto-assisted steering and door latch control.

Tesla is recalling more than 1.6 million Model S, X, 3 and Y electric vehicles in China due to problems with auto-assisted steering and door latch controls.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced the recall on Friday, and Tesla Motors in Beijing and Shanghai said they would use remote upgrades to resolve the issue.

SAMR said, “In the vehicles affected by this recall, if the automatic steering assistance function is turned on, the driver may abuse the Level 2 combined driving assistance function, increasing the risk of vehicle collision. “This could pose a safety risk.”

The recall also includes 7,538 imported Tesla models manufactured between October 26, 2022 and November 16, 2023 that were found to have an “issue with the door unlock logic control.” found.

In 2022, the company also recalled about 128,000 cars in China due to a defective rear motor inverter.

China is an important market and manufacturing base for Tesla, and CEO Elon Musk has forged close ties with Chinese officials even as U.S.-China relations deteriorated.

Tesla’s Shanghai production facility is the first “gigafactory” to be built overseas and will deliver about 947,000 vehicles in 2023, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported earlier this week.

The recall follows last month’s recall of more than 2 million Tesla electric vehicles in the U.S. to improve driver monitoring systems.

The announcement also comes after a two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the system was flawed after a series of crashes occurred when cars were in Autopilot mode.

The upgrade is intended to force drivers using Tesla’s Autopilot system to pay more attention to the road, and documents filed by Tesla with the U.S. government state that the software allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel. It states that the warnings and alerts will be strengthened to prevent this.
