dallas —Today, Boeing announced that Thailand’s flag carrier, Thai Airways International (TG), has ordered 45 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The Bangkok-based airline announced at the Singapore Air Show that it will equip its aircraft with GEnx engines for sustainability purposes.
Boeing chose the Dreamliner to maximize route expansion potential, the American aircraft manufacturer announced in a press release this morning. The aircraft’s range should help it achieve this, with an additional 2,390 kilometers (1,485 miles) of range compared to its similarly sized Airbus replacement, the A330.
Thailand’s flag carrier has also secured an option from Boeing to replace this order with other members of Boeing’s widebody fleet. This could be in the form of the up-and-coming Boeing 777X, scheduled to fly in 2025. The advantage of this is that TG may be able to confirm the performance of the aircraft before placing the order. This may be an incredibly wise move, given Boeing’s track record with the 737 MAX, which was grounded after two years in service.
Thai Dreamliner fleet
Thai Airways’ current widebody fleet already consists of two Boeing 787-9s and a smaller Boeing 787-8. In addition to this, TG operates both Boeing 777 aircraft and Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft. They serve around 60 international destinations, mainly in Asia, Oceania and Europe.
