Belgian media reported that their relationship “goes beyond friendship.” One newspaper reported that Nick, 20, and the Duchess of Brabant get along “very”.

The official added, “There was an instant connection.”

Elisabeth, the eldest daughter of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, became Belgium’s first female monarch and met Charles before her coronation.

She attended a £35,000-a-year school in Brussels, and Nick achieved excellent A-levels at Rochdale Sixth Form.

He lost his father Andrew, 44, to cancer in 2007 when he was just four years old, and when he is out of school he lives with his mother in a £300,000 terraced house.

Belgian media described Nick as a “civil boy” but “probably from a wealthy family” and an “excellent choice” as a potential husband.

Commenting on being accepted to Oxford University in 2021, he said: “I wanted the opportunity to study at a world-class university.

“We recommend that you apply even if you are even a little unsure.

“You have nothing to lose.”

Yesterday, one of Nick’s relatives made light of the rumors, saying: “They’re just studying together.”
