Greenhouse residence by Gurea Arquitectura Cooperativa
of design team Gurea Arquitectura Cooperativa forms a simple and compact volume of the cork and wood house, contrasting with the complexity of the internal structure. A distinctive feature is the gallery that cuts across and divides the space, which serves as a greenhouse for most of the year. This unique design distributes warm air to both sections of the home, centered around the kitchen, resulting in a thick, H-shaped floor plan.

Gurea Arquitectura Cooperativa with its cork and wood houses utilizes a bioclimatic strategy and an industrialized system of laminated timber for construction. Prefabricated components, including laminated timber frames, were created in the workshop, reducing construction risk and time. Assembly on site took just one week. The efficiency of this approach has been demonstrated. Interestingly, the owners actively participated in finishing touches and completing small works, contributing to giving the residence a personal touch.
Natural materials such as cork and wood are used in a compact volume.
In addition to its appeal, the use of glulam serves as a sustainable option that reduces carbon emissions and energy demands. The enhanced insulation combined with underfloor air heating reduces energy consumption to almost zero. This commitment to green building techniques is in line with the architect’s vision of creating a house that permanently embodies the dual conditions of hermeticity and permeability, natural and artificial, industrialization and craftsmanship, refuge and freedom. We are doing so.
