Thompson advances to state dual tournament; Oak Mountain, Spain Park and Chelsea wrestlers perform well in regional dual tournaments

Alabaster – The Thompson Warriors will compete in the Class 7A State Duals Tournament after finishing second in the Class 7A, Region 3 Duals Tournament held Jan. 5 and 6 at Thompson High School.
The Warriors finished the weekend with a 4-1 record, defeating Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Chelsea and Vestavia Hills, with their only loss coming in a hard-fought game against Hewitt-Trussville.
Thompson started the day Friday in a 52-24 win over Oak Mountain with Austin Owen, Jordan Weltzin, Henry Bedtke, Paxton Miller, Jayden Moore and Marley Kholewinski all winning first-period falls. It marked the opening of the event.
Additionally, Avery Clark won the match with a third period fall and Will Atkinson finished the match with a 13-0 major decision victory.
The Warriors then defeated Spain Park 58-21 as 10 Warriors won against the Jags.
Johnson, Atkinson, Owen, Weltzin, Turner-Hutson, Miller, Moore, Wyatt Massey, Clark and Dylan Marquis all earned home wins.
Thompson played in the third game of the tournament against Vestavia Hills, winning 51-21.
Atkinson, Gunn, Weltzin, Bedtke, Miller, Moore and Moore all won their matches by fall, with Clark winning a 17-6 major decision and Johnson getting a 19-4 technical fall.
The Warriors were 3-0 going into the championship match against Hewitt-Trussville.
Thompson won four of the first six games thanks to wins from Atkinson, Weltzin, Bedtke and Hutson, taking a 20-12 lead.
However, as the match wore on, the Huskies caught up close, cutting the lead to just two points with two decisions in the 165-pound and 175-pound bouts.
Clark won the match by major decision, putting the Warriors up 30-24, but Hewitt won the 215-pound and 285-pound matches by decision, tying the two matches at 30 pounds, and forcing the 106-pound match into the final. And so. Match.
The Huskies’ Gavin Bittle pinned Johnson 1:39 into the first period to give his team a 36-30 victory, giving Hewitt two games to go and the district tournament championship.
Thompson defeated Chelsea 48-30 in the final game, winning nine consecutive games and earning second place and a spot in the state tournament.
Seven of the nine wins came by fall, including pins by Cole Hutchings, Owen and Josiah Turner in less than a minute.
The Warriors will face Huntsville in the state tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, January 20th at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Thompson’s second-place finish wasn’t the only notable result at the regional duals, as Oak Mountain, Spain Park and Chelsea each had impressive performances.
The Oak Mountain Eagles won three of five games in the tournament, defeating Tuscaloosa County, Hoover and Spain Park.
After opening the weekend with a loss to Thompson, the Eagles split the first four games with Hoover and took a 12-6 lead with pins from Jameson Thomas and Trey Denney.
Oak Mountain would pull away from there and win the next six games to clinch the match.
James Franklin, Brady Coggin, Drayton Gooch, Jesse Palmer, and Coleman Sovin each won their matches to take a commanding lead, and Peyton Gamble got the pin to put the finishing touches on a 40-26 victory. Did.
The Eagles won the next game against Tuscaloosa County, winning 70-11, dropping only two games along the way.
After the Wildcats forfeited most of the match, Noah Washington, Aaron Farish and Jackson Ingle each secured falls and Trey Foster won a 12-2 major decision.

As for the Jags, Kyle Oliveira and Bradley Williams both remained undefeated after Oliveira went 3-0 and Williams went 4-0 over the weekend.
Oliveira defeated Atkins of Thompson and Caleb Boylan of Vestavia Hills by pin and defeated Gamble of Oak Mountain by technical fall, 17-2.
As for Williams, he pinned Thompson’s Owen Dyson and Oak Mountain’s Palmer, and picked up a 16-6 major decision over Vestavia Hills’ Grayer Manone, as well as a forfeit victory.
The Jags’ only win in the tournament came in the opener against Tuscaloosa County. Josh Milazzo, Yazan Ismail, John Maalouf, Christian Carter and London Ford won their matches, and five Spain Park wrestlers also won by forfeit.
The Jags lost the game in the tiebreaker and came very close to defeating Vestavia Hills. It was a back-and-forth game, with both teams staying close from start to finish, with Spain Park holding a 38-32 lead heading into the final game.

The Hornets shut out Tuscaloosa County 82-0 after Jameson Bolen, Adam Cornwell, Hudson Brakefield, Adam Wheeler, Porter Schott and Logan Sanders each secured first-period pins.
Chelsea won the next round against Hoover in a close game 38-36.
After the Bucks took the first three games, Chelsea moved within three points with wins from William Hartsfield, Landon Keith and Tanner Burrows.
Cornwell and Brakefield also picked up wins, leading to a back-and-forth battle as the Hornets took the lead with a shot decision win and a pin from Carter Parrish.
Huber won the 285-pound match to regain the lead, 36-33 going into the final match of the dual.
Chelsea won by two points, with Bolen scoring five points with a 12-4 decision.
Specifically, Schott pinned Tuscaloosa County’s Carter Reeder and Thompson’s Mitch McPherson, and defeated Hoover’s Jayden Mooneyham by a 5-2 decision, improving his record to 23-4.
