Panna cotta’s origins can be traced to northern Italy, particularly Piedmont and Lombardy. Although its exact origins are somewhat obscure, panna cotta is thought to have evolved from a traditional dessert made with cream, milk, and sweeteners. Its simplicity and versatility made it popular in Italian households and eventually in restaurants across the country.

What makes a delicious panna cotta?

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla essence

2 1/4 teaspoons powdered gelatin

3 tablespoons cold water

Put the cream, milk, and sugar in a saucepan and heat over medium heat. Stir occasionally until sugar dissolves and mixture just starts to boil. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

Place the gelatin powder in a small bowl, sprinkle with cold water, and let stand for 5 minutes to soften.

Once the gelatin has swollen, gently heat it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds until completely melted and liquid.

Pour the melted gelatin into the warm cream mixture and stir until well combined.

Strain the mixture through a fine sieve to remove any lumps or air bubbles.

Distribute mixture evenly among individual serving glasses or ramekins.

Chill panna cotta in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or until firm.

To serve, run a knife around the edge of each panna cotta and invert onto a plate. Serve with fresh berries, fruit compote or caramel sauce, depending on your preference.
