Traffic fatalities will increase in Singapore in 2023, police will increase demerit points for certain crimes

SINGAPORE — Road fatalities are on an alarming rise, with 136 people killed in 2023, a 25.9% increase from 108 deaths in 2022, the Traffic Police (TP) says. This was stated in the annual road traffic situation report on Tuesday (20th). February).

Police also pointed to a significant increase in the number of accidents where drivers fail to keep a proper lookout, do not properly control their vehicles and change lanes inadvertently.

To address this, TP plans to increase component totals and demerit points for certain traffic violations. Details will be announced later this year.

The number of traffic accidents resulting in personal injury also increased from 6,779 in 2022 to 6,944 in 2023. The number of casualties in 2023 was 8,931, an increase of 5.8% compared to 8,441 in 2022.

TP Commander Daniel Tan said on Tuesday: “We are naturally concerned about the increase in road fatalities over the past two years.”

“The focus is on the most vulnerable road users: motorcyclists, passengers and elderly pedestrians. That is why TP plans to strengthen its enforcement methods. From next quarter, red light We will be introducing speed enforcement features on our cameras and will crack down on road users who blatantly ignore the law.”

Fatal accidents caused by running red lights, speeding, and drunk driving are on the rise.

The annual report highlighted an increase in the number of fatal accidents caused by running red lights, speeding, and drunk driving from 2022 to 2023.

  • Fatal accidents caused by running a red light: 3 to 8 cases.

  • Fatal accidents caused by speeding: 18 to 33 cases.

  • Drunk driving accidents: 175-180.

  • Drunk driving fatal accidents: 10 to 11 cases.

However, from 2022 to 2023, the number of red light and speeding incidents and the number of red light and speeding-related accidents decreased.

  • Red light violation: 44,688 to 31,815 (28.8%).

  • Speeding violations: 125,530 to 115,705 (7.8%).

  • Red light running accidents: 137 to 112 (18.2%).

  • Accidents related to speeding: 1,138 to 624 (45.2%).

Although motorcycles account for only 14.4% of Singapore’s total motor vehicle population, half of all road fatalities last year involved motorcyclists and their passengers.

Meanwhile, elderly people, who make up 19.1% of the population, were involved in 68.4% of all pedestrian traffic fatalities and accounted for 69.2% of pedestrian fatalities.

Police said: “Motorcyclists and elderly pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users and continue to cause a disproportionate number of personal injury accidents.”

Enforcement of red light cameras strengthened, speed enforcement function enabled

Although the number of violations detected by traffic enforcement cameras decreased last year, the number of violations detected by other police enforcement activities increased from 52,016 in 2022 to 63,468 in 2023. % increased.

Fatal accidents related to speeding also increased by 83.3%, with fatalities due to speeding increasing from 17.3% in 2022 to 25.2% in 2023.

In response, police will introduce red light camera (RLC) speed enforcement from next quarter, particularly in areas with “high accident and violation rates”. A list of RLCs and their locations can be found on the SPF website.

The current penalty for running a red light is 12 demerit points and a $400 or $500 fine for light and heavy vehicles, respectively. A DUI charge can result in a fine of up to $10,000 and up to one year in prison.
