Two people were killed Sunday when a light plane crashed into a car as it was landing in strong winds at an airport in eastern Belgium, authorities said.

During the failed landing attempt, the aircraft crashed into a car parked on the street next to Spa’s airfield, setting both cars on fire.

“Unfortunately, two people died on board the plane. It appears that the landing was unsuccessful,” local police commander Jean-Michel Lejeune was quoted as saying by news agency AFP.

Police officials said the pilot was German, but the nationality of the passenger was still under investigation.

According to media reports, the driver of the car fled for a smoke break, which likely saved his life.

Images published in Belgian media showed charred car wrecks and thick black smoke near the runway as emergency vehicles blocked traffic.

According to reports, environmental protection officials were also present to ensure that the famous spring water bottled at the spa was not contaminated.
