UAE authorities handed over Gergely Fran, an Albanian national charged with premeditated murder, to the relevant Belgian authorities on December 29, 2023, following an extradition request submitted to the UAE government.
The suspect was transferred to the relevant authorities in accordance with the extradition agreement signed by the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Belgium, subject to established legal and judicial procedures, trials and resolutions of the UAE Minister of Justice. The extradition was approved on December 13, 2023.

The UAE signed an extradition agreement with the Kingdom of Belgium in December 2021. The country completed its national legal requirements in August 2022, and Belgium completed the same process in October 2022. The agreement officially entered into force in November 2022.
The extradition agreement with the Kingdom of Belgium is one of more than 40 agreements signed with several countries in recent years, and the UAE is committed to pursuing further agreements in this regard.
These agreements aim to strengthen efforts to combat dangerous global crimes such as organized crime, money laundering, terrorist financing, and drug smuggling by all countries on legal and judicial matters in accordance with best international practices.
