She presents seven carefully staged scenes, each featuring a female protagonist, reflecting different aspects of the moon, a powerful source of feminine energy, and revealing untold stories. We speak to Jin, head of Singapore’s art gallery Yo She Workshop, about becoming an artist and the different stages of her creative process.

You were born in Singapore in 1990. Please tell us about your background and what drew you to art.

Art is a powerful language that brings people together and allows us to share our experiences. Neither of my parents are particularly involved in the arts. In my extended family, only my late grandfather dabbled in art. From conversations with his family and his late grandmother, his grandfather worked as a driver and when he wasn’t working, he created sculptures, paintings, and hand-colored photographs. I never met him because he passed away at the young age of 40, but I feel a strange attachment to him because I feel we share a common passion. I have always found that art provides a unique and universal way to meaningfully engage with others. It not only offers new ways of seeing and understanding, but also dialogue and connection with others across cultural and linguistic boundaries. My early artistic work aimed to bridge the estranged relationships between family members through the process of staging and recording. I like to believe that art has the power to bring people together in meaningful and lasting ways.

You initially trained as a painter, but what drew you to photography, video and installation art?

I first trained as a painter and then moved on to exploring photography as a medium. I began to frequently refer to photographs when painting, and began to notice the relationship between photographs and paintings. At that time, I came across my grandfather’s hand-dyed photographic works. As I tried to create images similar to my grandfather’s work, it was natural for me to develop an aesthetic sense for painting on photographs. Video allows you to consider the element of time.

Describe your artistic language and philosophy. What are the most important considerations when first starting to create artwork?

The origins of each work typically arise from feelings of alienation, elation, nostalgia, and alienation. I have always believed in choosing the most appropriate medium and method to best convey the intention and mood behind each piece. We make thoughtful choices and decisions throughout the production process, taking into account the physical resources and context of the work. Marshall McLuhan aptly said, “The medium is the message.”

We will guide you through the various steps of the creative and production process. Please tell us about the technology, equipment, and materials.

I usually have an idea of what the final installation will look like and work backwards from my vision. This process is often intensive and arduous due to the level of detail and precision of the calculations. When shooting or on set, you need to be focused, proactive, and pay attention to detail. It will help you plan and sketch your thoughts and processes and paste them on the wall for further consideration. Every motif, every frame must be carefully considered. Every breakthrough in a work of art, whether conceptual or technological, is an affirmation for the artist and an achievement in many ways. The intense flood of endorphins during the process of forming an idea is as exhilarating as the moment of uneasy silence when an artist stands in front of a completed work. The entire process of creating a piece, from beginning to end, is a very important moment for me.
