On the first day of Singapore Art Week 2024, we gathered in the luxurious reception area of Whitestone Gallery. Hidden within an industrial park in Tanjong Pagar Distripark, the space’s cavernous entrance is covered in striking wooden geometric patterns. This is a hallmark of the gallery’s designer, renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. With over 700 guests in attendance, the atmosphere is lively and chatty as guests mingle over canapés and cocktails.
The grand event in question: the opening ceremony A trip to the Lobster Planet Written by British artist Philip Colbert. Colbert, also known as “Andy Warhol’s godson,” has amassed a worldwide following for his lobster alter ego cartoons and vibrant, hyper-pop historical paintings. This will be his first major solo exhibition in Singapore. As well as unprecedented works, there will also be a unique exhibition of his art alongside the work of acclaimed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
Blending his Old Master style work with the sci-fi world of Lobster Planet, it delves into the pivotal role technology plays in shaping humanity today. As part of the exhibition, his giant inflatable sculpture of a cartoon lobster will also be installed in Fullerton Bay, inviting passersby from all walks of life to interact with his art.

While admiring the vibrant works on display, guests were also able to chat with the artist himself and have his iconic lobster figure figurine autographed.
