🇩🇰 Denmark: DMGP producer talks about creating great shows for viewers

Must read

The producer of Dansk Melody Grand Prix 2024 talks about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating a great show for the audience.

This year, for the first time, the Dansk Melody Grand Prix will be held at DR Koncerthuset, a 1,800-seat concert venue in the capital, Copenhagen.

Show producer Carsten Andersen spoke about the effort that goes into producing a show like this once the locations are decided.

The first thing producers think about is how to make the show more exciting. We work closely with set designer Jonny Singgaard Riddixen to decide whether to extend the stage, what it should look like, where to place the orchestra, and whether we need a dressing room.

In order to create more atmosphere and bring life to the hall, it was decided that the audience would stand on the parterre. Only once Karsten understands the scenography can he begin to plan where to place the camera.

Artists come up with songs that have a thought behind them, and if you can bring that out, support that, and get the best out of them, then we’ve succeeded.

With a total of eight cameras, Karsten insists on working with skilled photographers.

There are 8 separate stage shows that can be configured to your wishes, including back screens, lights, laser lights, smoke, and more. At the same time, there are several minutes of scene changes between songs, so we had to think about how to make them as smooth as possible. We often end up somewhere between ambition and reality, but artists are usually happy.

Carsten Andersen, who served as DMGP’s producer last year, is looking forward to bringing the show to viewers this year.

Melody Grand Prix brings to the world eight songs that might not have been created without it. I would be happy if I could help you create something new. I hope it looks good and is good entertainment.

Dansk Melody Grand Prix 2024 will take place on February 17th at the DR Concerttuset in Copenhagen. The show is hosted by Stephanie Srug and Sarah Bro.

A combination of jury and public votes will determine the entry to Malmö, Denmark. Unlike in recent years, the number of judges will increase and will include judges from outside Denmark.

Riley won the 2023 edition with ‘Breaking My Heart’ and represented Denmark at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. He qualified for the second semi-final, but did not qualify for the grand final. Instead, he received six points only from Icelanders, finishing 14th out of 16 countries.

Denmark first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1957, along with Austria and the United Kingdom. So far Denmark has won this contest three times, the first time being in 1963 when she performed “Dansevis” with Grete and Jorgen Ingman. Denmark also won this contest in 2000, represented by the Olsen brothers. Their most recent triumph was in 2013 when Emery de Forest performed “Only Teardrops.” Denmark has not reached the final of the Eurovision Song Contest since 2019.
