1 in 2 people in Ireland will develop cancer

6:10am: I’m already commuting by train from my home in Cork to my office in Dublin. I brought breakfast – yogurt and fruit and nuts and seeds. I try to eat a high fiber diet as it has been proven to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

8:30am: I arrive at Heuston Station and walk to the HSE National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) offices on Parnell Street. Exercise reduces the risk of developing bowel cancer and other cancers, but it can be difficult to fit into a busy lifestyle, so I try to get as much exercise as possible. Incorporate physical activity into your day. Walking is an easy way to do this.

9:30am: I meet with colleagues to review progress on our cancer prevention efforts. It is estimated that one in two people in Ireland will develop cancer in their lifetime. Cancer prevention initiatives such as the ‘Reducing Cancer Risk’ e-learning program for healthcare professionals, the SunSmart campaign and cancer awareness research aim to help people reduce their risk wherever possible. 11am: I attended a meeting to discuss preparations for World Cancer Day 2024, which will be held on February 4th. NCCP is part of the Irish Cancer Prevention Network (ICPN), along with the Marie Keating Foundation, the Irish Cancer Society, the HSE National Screening Service and the Irish Cancer Prevention Network (ICPN). Groundbreaking cancer research. Together, we host an annual World Cancer Day webinar. This year, the focus will be on reducing the risk of bowel and lung cancer and raising awareness of the signs and symptoms.

1pm: I have a chicken salad lunch with a colleague and then go for a quick lunchtime walk.

3 pm: We review the evidence regarding smoking cessation efforts and support for people diagnosed with cancer. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for lung cancer and greatly increases the risk of developing many other cancers. However, it’s never too late to quit smoking. Quitting smoking at any stage reduces your risk of cancer.

6 pm: I got back on the train and got a chance to catch up with my husband and do a little reading. She gets home in time to read bedtime stories to her children and put them to bed.
