made by Finland The Finnish Research Council has announced a significant funding increase of €13 million for the Finnish Quantum Flagship (FQF), a bold move in the field of quantum technology. This significant investment marks the beginning of an ambitious eight-year project scheduled to begin in March 2024, with this initial funding being reinforced by equal contributions from member organizations for the first five years.
FQF, a consortium of leading Finnish institutions, includes Aalto University (coordinator), Finnish VTT Technology Research Center, University of Helsinki, University of Jyväskylä, University of Tampere, University of Oulu, and CSC-IT Science Center. This joint effort aims to push Finland to the forefront of quantum research, education and technology development.
Under the guidance of Professor peter lilgeros Aalto University professor FQF is poised to further enhance Finland’s already strong reputation in the quantum field. “The spirit of cooperation between Finland’s universities, research institutes, government agencies and industrial partners sets us apart in the global race for advances in quantum technology,” said Lilgelos.
The FQF’s focus goes beyond promoting national cooperation. One of its key objectives is to address the persistent challenge of attracting and retaining international talent in the quantum field. With this funding, FQF will launch new research activities and industrial collaborations, and raise awareness of quantum technologies through open access educational programs and training.
Moreover, FQF is not only a national initiative, but also a Nordic and international one. Nordic Quantum Cooperation with neighboring Nordic countries is ongoing as part of international cooperation, and extensive European and bilateral relations have been strengthened over the years, particularly with the United States.
Housed within InstituteQ, Finland’s quantum research institute established in 2021, FQF serves as a catalyst for research excellence, technology implementation, commercial opportunities and national training programs in quantum science and technology. This flagship project, with its multifaceted approach and international cooperation, will solidify Finland’s position as a leader in the rapidly evolving quantum technology environment.
