Three people injured in chemical accident at Coke pharmaceutical factory

Three people were injured in a chemical spray at a pharmaceutical factory in Ringaskiddy, Co Cork.

The incident occurred at the Janssen Science Ireland factory on Friday evening.

The injuries are understood to include skin blistering after being exposed to the chemical.

Emergency services including the National Ambulance Service, Gardai and the fire brigade were called to the scene.

Jansen confirmed that the accident occurred at the factory around 5:15 p.m.

“Three people were treated at the scene by Janssen first responders,” a company spokesperson said.

“We followed procedure and contacted emergency services. Two of them were then taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH).”

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified of the incident.

The agency’s role is to promote occupational safety, including the safe use of chemicals and products.

A Janssen spokesperson said: “The safety of those working on site is our top priority.”

Emergency services are said to have left the scene by 8 p.m.

A statement from Janssen Science Ireland is expected to be released regarding the impact of the incident on staff.

Janssen has operated in Cork since 2005 and manufactures medicines for a variety of diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis and multiple myeloma.
