Danish company Nordic Waste has filed for bankruptcy, sparking a political scandal.

The bankruptcy of the company, which reprocesses contaminated soil, could cost taxpayers €27 million.

After filing for bankruptcy, Denmark will likely have to pay for the cleanup work needed after a massive landslide at a contaminated soil reprocessing plant.

Earlier in the week, the Ministry of the Environment issued an interim injunction against Nordic waste. After this ruling, the company declared bankruptcy.

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke and Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard reacted sharply to this, stressing that the government would do everything in its power to make Nordic Waste pay for the cleanup.

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke stressed that “we will use all legal means to ensure that financial responsibility lies where it belongs: with the polluters.”

Nordic Waste is backed by Torben Østergaard Nielsen, Denmark’s sixth-richest billionaire.

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard appealed to billionaire Ostergaard Nielsen for his sense of responsibility.

“I’m currently reading ‘Pippi Longstocking’ to my two daughters before they go to bed. There’s a really good line about Pippi: ‘If you’re very, very strong,’ and A wealthy man has to say, ‘Well then, you.’ There’s also a huge responsibility to be very good. And that’s what we’re missing in this case.” said Hummelgaard.
