Moves to expand and strengthen Ireland’s national parks and tackle rising wildlife crime have been included in a new National Biodiversity Action Plan, backed by legal powers for the first time.

“Nature is in trouble, but I believe it can recover,” Noonan said ahead of NBAP’s publication. But there was a turning point in “the way we see and think about the natural world and our place within it,” he said.
“We are finally ready to change our behavior and exercise our responsibilities as well as our rights towards the planet. It is this willingness to act that we must hold on to most firmly. At a time when the scientific evidence explaining the scale of the challenges facing the world is so frightening, our own commitment to action is the best evidence of hope,” he said.
“For the first time, NBAP is supported by legislation, a €3.15 billion climate and nature fund, significant public interest and strong political leadership. [It] Responds to some of the key recommendations from the Citizens’ Assembly on biodiversity loss. ”
