Danish firefighters rescue five people from ice on Moose Pond

Five people were rescued after breaking through the ice at a moose pond in Denmark on Saturday. All five people were taken to hospital, according to a Facebook post from the Danish Fire Service.

At 5:26 p.m., a call came in from people on the ice on Moose Pond asking for help. The Danish Fire Department responded with ice rescue equipment. The Danish Fire Service said Bridgeton Fire and Rescue Services had been requested to provide additional assistance for ice rescuers.

When first responders arrived on the scene, they found five people stuck on the ice due to hypothermia and unable to get to shore. Rescue workers pushed an ice rescue sled across the ice and floated it to the surface of the water. The sleigh was pulled back to shore each time with one or two of her patients on board.

All five patients were rescued and taken to hospital within 47 minutes of the initial call.

In addition to Bridgeton and Denmark firefighters, agencies that assisted were Brownfield, Fryeburg, United Ambulance Service and the Oxford County Regional Communications Center, and dispatchers liaised with other agencies to provide assistance throughout Oxford County, according to the Danish Fire Department. It is said that they were handling multiple reports.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is assisting with the rescue investigation.
