Tipperary’s Amy Lee Murphy-Crow scores as Ireland’s women’s rugby sevens team beat hosts Australia 19-14 in the final at Rectangular Stadium to win gold in the HSBC SVNS Series in Perth this morning. I put my name on the sheet.

It was a historic success for Ireland as they won their first ever World Series tournament and will gain momentum as they prepare to qualify for the Paris Olympics this summer.

Australia led 7-0 early on, but Ireland hit back with a goal from Amy-Lee Murphy-Crow. The Tipperary Town player finished the weekend with six tries.

Lucy Mulhall then scored another try to make it 14-7 at half-time.

Australia equalized early in the second half with Teagan Levi scoring and Eve Higgins scoring Ireland’s crucial third try.

Ireland defeated Great Britain 31-7 in the semi-finals that day, securing a place in the final against the home team.

Ireland earned a total of 20 SVNS Series points in Perth, moving them from seventh to fourth overall.

They are only six points behind third-place France, the Olympic host nation. The SVNS Series resumes with back-to-back events in Vancouver (February 23-25) and Los Angeles (March 1-3).

Ireland had finished fifth in Dubai the previous week and had reached the semi-finals of the Cape Town Sevens in mid-December.
