Sir Jeffrey told a press conference tonight: “In February 2022, the DUP withdrew the then Prime Minister as a result of the imposition of the Northern Ireland Protocol, which did not have the support of Northern Ireland’s elected union representatives. I did,” he said.
“We warned that the failure to respond to the Protocol, its imposition without consent and its destructive impact on the delicate political balance were leading to an unsustainable position.
“By taking a strong and principled stance, we were able to bring the UK Government and the EU Commission to negotiations.
“We have been working with the UK Government in recent months to ensure Northern Ireland has the best chance of long-term prosperity.”
He said the bill, agreed by Westminster, would abolish checks for goods that move within the UK and remain in Northern Ireland.
He added that this would ensure that “Northern Ireland does not blindly follow EU law”.
He added: “There will be legislation to protect the Act of Union, which guarantees Northern Ireland businesses free access to the rest of the UK.”
