Finland’s energy wood trade will increase in 2023

Until September 2023, Finnish energy wood prices increased significantly more in permanent sales than in delivery sales. The average price of pruned stems in 2023 rose to 19.4 euros in permanent sales, 2.6 times higher than in the previous year in real terms. In the case of home delivery sales, the price increased 1.3 times to 43.4 euros. The average price of pruned stems in the final quarter of 2023 remained at roughly the same level as the previous quarter. The real average price increased by 1% for standing sales and decreased by 3% for delivery sales.

The price of logging residue fell. Average prices fell 3% for standing sales and 4% for delivery sales.

In the last quarter of this year, a total of 1.3 million cubic meters of energy wood was included in the statistics. This was one-fifth higher than the average for the previous five years.

2023

The average price paid for energy wood in 2023 was EUR 10.0 per cubic meter for standing sales and EUR 37.3 per cubic meter for delivery sales. The average price has increased, increasing by 1.7 times compared to the previous year for retail sales and 1.2 times for home delivery.

The average price of pruned stems was 19.4 euros per cubic meter for permanent sales and 43.4 euros per cubic meter for home delivery sales. The price increase rates compared to the previous year were approximately 2.6 times and 1.3 times, respectively.

The average price of logging residue was 7.3 euros for permanent sales and 25.5 euros for delivery sales. The price increases were approximately 1.4 times and 1.2 times, respectively.

Logging residue transactions increased quarter-over-quarter, while pruned stem transactions decreased 2% year-over-year. The recorded trading volume of all energy wood increased by a quarter compared to the previous year and compared to the average of the previous five years.

Three-quarters of the transaction value recorded in 2023 was covered by permanent sales and one-quarter by delivery sales. Just over half of all energy wood was felled residue and one-third was pruned stems. Due to the limited energy use of stumps, the remainder was almost completely unpruned stems.
