Rishi Sunak arrived in Northern Ireland this evening after power sharing was finally restored.
The First Minister visited Belfast after Stormont returned to work following an agreement with the DUP.
He is scheduled to meet with civil servants this evening before meeting with leading politicians tomorrow.
Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill made history as the country’s first republican prime minister, while Labor member Emma Littlepengelly was appointed deputy minister.
Both men yesterday celebrated the historic moment when the facility was officially restored and pledged to work together to improve people’s lives.
But the Sinn Féin vice president risked reigniting tensions in the interview, saying he would press ahead with his call for an Irish unity referendum if he met Mr Sunak.
Asked if he expected a vote on the island of Ireland to be held within 10 years, Mr O’Neill said: “Absolutely.” We believe this is a decade of opportunity.
“And there are a lot of things that are all going to change the old norms, the nature of the country, the fact that a nationalist republican was never supposed to be prime minister. All of these things speak to that change. .
“And I think that’s in view of what’s going on here. So I think the next decade is going to be a decade of opportunity.”
Mr O’Neill said he “absolutely disagrees” with British ministers’ claims that border checks are decades away.
Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris has to agree there is strong support for holding a referendum, but last week he said he does not expect Ireland to be united in his lifetime. said. Mr. Heaton Harris is 56 years old.
The Sinn Féin vice-president’s appointment was confirmed on the day the power-sharing body returned after a two-year hiatus.
Heaton-Harris described Saturday as “a great day for Northern Ireland”. He told the assembled media that he believed Northern Ireland’s devolved government was “sustainable in the very long term”.

The DUP has agreed to recall its political institutions following an agreement with Westminster on post-Brexit trade rules.
Party leader Sir Geoffrey Donaldson said the policy effectively removed what he had previously condemned as a border with the rest of the UK.
On Thursday, the government passed two bills in the House of Commons implementing the agreement, paving the way for parliament to return yesterday.
