A 55-year-old engineer from Pune was allegedly duped of Rs 2.9 million by a cyber fraudster posing as a recruiter of a Denmark-based construction company, police said on Monday, saying a case had been registered in connection with the case. An additional announcement was made.
Police said the scammers lured him with promises of work, fabricated interview fees and consulate visa fees, and then demanded visas for him and his wife.
An FIR in the case was registered at Cyber Police Station in Pune city last week. The mechanical engineer who filed the complaint most recently worked for an engineering solutions company.
In October, he received an email saying he had been offered a job at a construction company in Denmark.
After he expressed interest in the offer, he was made to appear for an online interview and digitally sign an employment contract. Police said he was then asked to send documents for visa applications for himself and his wife.
The callers then contacted him on various pretexts, including visa processing fees, power of attorney, stamp duty, health and travel insurance, Indian notary stamp fees, consular fees, visa confirmation, etc. He started demanding large amounts of money.
Between October last year and January, he was manipulated into making 18 online transfers totaling 28.8 million rupees. As the person on the other end of the phone kept asking for money, the complainant became suspicious and contacted the Danish embassy in India, where he learned that he had been scammed.
He then approached the Cyber Crime Police Station.
