Denmark’s Ganni unveils a bag made from plant-based fur substitute “BioFluff” – vegconomist

Danish fashion brand Gunny showcased a special edition bag made from plant-based fur alternatives at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

The bag is based on the design of Gunny’s popular Bou bag, and the fur is made by biomaterial startup BioFluff. The material, which is claimed to be the world’s first completely plant-based fur alternative, is called Sabian and contains fibers from plants such as nettle, flax and hemp. It is completely plastic-free and can be colored using natural dyes. BioFluff raised $2.5 million in seed funding in November in a round led by agri-food tech investor Astanor Ventures.

Ghani also presented bags made from two other innovative materials at Copenhagen Fashion Week. One is made using Celium, an alternative leather made by Spanish biomaterials company Polybion. The material is made by using food waste to feed bacteria, which produce biodegradable cellulose that can be used to make materials like leather. It can be dyed, embossed and tanned using the same machinery used to make traditional leather.

The third bag is made from Oleatex, a leather alternative made from olive waste and recycled materials. This material was one of the five awards he won in the sustainability category at last year’s V-Label Awards.

responsible solution

Ganni has previously developed saddlebags and wallets made from Bolt Threads’ mycelium-based leather alternative, Mylo. This bag was released in his 2022 year. At the time, Ghani said the material was the first plastic-free leather alternative that met rigorous performance and durability standards.

The brand also said it plans to phase out virgin animal skin by 2023 to become more sustainable. Although it is unclear whether this goal was achieved, Ghani continues to experiment with leather alternatives such as vesia (made from grape waste) and ojoskin (made from orange and cactus waste and recycled plastic). There is. Later, this brand was certified as a B Corp.

Ganni founder Nicolaj Refstrup said in 2022, “Our job is to create responsible solutions that not only match traditional products, but exceed them.”
