National Broadband Ireland CEO updates Kerry County Council on plan development
Almost half of the 28,000 properties in Kerry included in the government’s ‘intervention areas’ plan for the rollout of high-speed broadband have connectivity.
There are currently 13,512 premises under the jurisdiction of National Broadband Ireland (NBI) where you can order a network on land in towns and towns across the county.
This includes 3000 connections each in Killarney and Tralee. Kilgarvan has 2000, Dingle 1800, Ballyheig 1500, Castlegregory 900 and Rathmore 700.
National Broadband Ireland (NBI) CEO TJ Malone will meet with Kerry County Council on Monday (19 February) to discuss the ongoing NBI rollout on behalf of the Government. .
Mr Malone said 3,300 properties in Kerry were already connected, which was below the national average connection rate.
He said: “We urge Kerry residents to check their status by visiting (www.nbi.ie/eoi) and entering their Eircode.”
“We are also reminding people that construction work is ongoing on Black Valley residents, over 4,000 sites in Listowel and over 1,000 sites in Sneem. We look forward to being able to connect to this,” Malone added.
He explained that NBI is working hard to achieve the rollout in County Kerry, with engineering studies almost complete and all facilities expected to move into the design and construction phase by the end of 2024.
“We will continue to provide regular progress updates,” Malone said. “We are confident that the rollout will be on time and on budget, and that all of our facilities will have the network up and running by the end of 2026.” Ta.
NBI offers high-speed fiber networks with speeds down to 500 Mbit/s. This is the biggest investment in rural Ireland since rural electrification in Ireland, with County Kerry receiving €107 million in government investment under the NBI scheme.
The aim is to allow residents to work, study and play online simultaneously without interruption. NBI is key for farms and businesses because high-speed broadband opens up opportunities for expansion and innovation.
