Former Wales manager Chris Coleman is currently considered a leading candidate for the Republic of Ireland senior men’s role as the federation looks to secure a permanent appointment before the international break next March.
England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley has long been a favorite and seen as an ideal option, but the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) have been unable to secure a deal for the former midfielder.

Ireland therefore looked for other options and Coleman stood out due to both his history of success in Wales and his Irish connections through his father, who is from Dublin.
Coleman has also spoken in the past about the possibility of managing the Irish team.
Despite world-class players like Gareth Bale being in their prime, he achieved great success by leading Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
Given that Coleman is seen as more old-fashioned, such an appointment would appear to go against the FAI’s ideals of making the next appointment a progressive coach on the pitch.
Coleman, who took charge of Sunderland after leaving Wales in 2017, spent his final coaching spell at Atromitos in Greece, ending in October 2023.
