Finnish architect Sami Rintala knows this. His Norway-based studio, Rintala Eggertsson, has created buildings that blend into nature without destroying it, such as the Arctic Hideaway in Hlaingvaer and the Safe House in Karsholmen. When she’s not working, Rintala loves nothing more than rolling around in the snow, skiing miles to the sauna in the woods outside Bodø.

One of his latest projects is a panoramic landscape hotel consisting of 10 cabins located in a forest near the ski resort of Táko in eastern Finland. At his Forest Spa, Lede invites guests to take a tour of the great outdoors. There are 3 saunas and 5 hot and cold pools with views of Lake Siberi. The spa takes its cues from traditional bathing cultures such as Japanese hot springs and Russian banya, where hot and cold elements are always enjoyed together, and the pools are supplied with water from natural hot springs. Each of the hotel’s cabins sleeps up to two people, has traditional shingle and grass roofs, and offers stunning views. The Wrede Forest Spa is small, unassuming and in harmony with the landscape. Rintala says it’s exactly the way it should be, without any of the equipment, gadgets or crowds you’d expect from a large spa. “We need an alternative to a big spa,” he says. “Smaller, more fragmented things invite people to get closer to nature.” This spa defies convention. “We all suffer from a loss of contact with nature.
