Spain’s gas demand falls for second year in a row, down 11% as renewable energy hits record high

MADRID, Dec 29 (Reuters) – Spain’s natural gas consumption fell for the second year in a row in 2023, falling by almost 11% due to increased use of renewable resources for electricity production.

More than half of the electricity generated in the country comes from renewable sources, and usage of the gas has fallen by nearly 31% since 2022, preliminary data released by gas grid operator Enagas on Friday showed.

A warm start to autumn also delayed the start of the heating season and suppressed demand.

Overall, Spain’s natural gas consumption in 2023 was 325.4 TWh, 10.7% lower than in 2022, despite a 3.9% increase in demand from domestic industry.

Gas demand in 2022 also decreased by approximately 3.7%.

Renewable energy such as wind and solar power is on track to generate a record 50.8% of Spain’s electricity this year.

The government wants to generate 81% of the country’s electricity from renewable energy by 2030, according to a draft plan presented in June.
