Cheers erupted as the man set to become his country’s first king in more than half a century made his first public appearance since the shocking news that his reign was about to begin.
With only days left until the start of his reign, Crown Prince Frederik was greeted with cheers and applause as he arrived at Copenhagen’s Amalienborg Palace to attend the traditional New Year’s Embankment.
It was the first glimpse of the soon-to-be Frederick X since his mother, Margrethe II, announced on January 14 that she would abdicate in favor of Frederick X.th 2024.
The Queen of Denmark surprised many with her decision, which she announced at the end of her traditional New Year’s Eve speech as 2023 draws to a close.
The Danish monarch also arrived at the palace to thunderous applause, but Margrethe II hurried into the palace while Frederik stood, smiling and waving.
In mid-January, the Crown Prince was accompanied by his wife, Crown Princess Mary, Denmark’s first queen consort in more than 50 years.
The Crown Princess, who had just received rave reviews in a speech by the Prime Minister, was all smiles when she arrived.
The queen-in-waiting wore a ruby and diamond parure left to Frederick by his grandmother Queen Ingrid, the last queen of Denmark.
Margrethe II plans to abdicate the throne at the State Council on January 14thth 2024, 52ndn.d. It is the anniversary of her coronation, and she will soon be succeeded by her son.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will then declare King Frederik X king at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.
