The ice hockey match marks the 30th anniversary of the Study USA program, which has brought more than 2,000 Northern Irish students to study at university in the United States.
More than 500 alumni will gather for the Friendship Series ice hockey game between Princeton University and Providence University on January 6th at the SSE Arena Belfast, where former students will share their memories of their time in the United States and the achievements they made. Study USA alumni include Tessa Breslin, vice president of the Queen’s University Belfast Foundation; International investment and cybersecurity guru Martin Bradley, Citi senior manager Hayden Stewart and Class of 2023 graduate Emma Allsop.
This event celebrates the great accomplishments of the program over its 30-year history. It was officially launched in 1994 and was funded by the Ministry of Economy.
It aims to support the peace process by offering undergraduate students the opportunity to spend a year abroad at universities across the United States. The scholarship funding package (worth around £45,000) includes room and board for the academic year, a generous textbook allowance and one return flight to the US.
The White House expressed support for the program in a letter written by President Bill Clinton in 2014. President Clinton and first lady Hillary were central figures in the Northern Ireland peace process throughout their political careers.
The Study USA program has enabled more than 2,000 students to study at U.S. universities. Between 50 and 60 jobs are available each year.
The event is hosted by the British Council Northern Ireland and the Department for the Economy.
