The United States and Finland will face off today in the semifinals of the 2024 World Juniors, with a spot in the gold medal match on the line.
The United States clinched the match in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, defeating Latvia 7-2. Gabe Perreault added two goals and an assist, Seamus Casey had three helpers and Jacob Fowler made 23 net saves in the win.
Coach David Karl’s side are undefeated in Group B and are yet to lose in this tournament. But the U.S. found itself in a similar situation last year when it faced Canada in the semifinals, its only loss. As a result, America had to settle for the bronze medal.
For Finland, Jere Lasila was the hero of the quarter-finals, with the Finnish captain scoring an extra-time goal to defeat Slovakia 4-3. Finland has been inconsistent so far, but the team has performed well so far and should be a tough matchup for the Americans.
The last time these two countries met was in the semi-finals of the 2021 tournament. The United States defeated Canada in the championship and won that match 4-3 en route to the gold medal. That year was the last time an American won a gold medal at this event.
The winner of this match will advance to the gold medal match, where they will face either Sweden or the Czech Republic. The loser will compete for the bronze medal.
