The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) said the severe cold wave of recent days will continue into the weekend, with temperatures in central parts of the country potentially dropping to -40 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, temperatures in the south will reach around -15C on Saturday, while temperatures in Finnish Lapland will range from -20C to -30C.

FMI predicts the bitter cold will continue until Sunday, with temperatures in the south expected to drop to -25 degrees Celsius.

However, Monday’s outlook shows temperatures will rise significantly across the country, although driving conditions will become hazardous in many areas.

By Tuesday, thermometer readings in the South and West could rise above freezing for the first time this year. However, it will be only a little and the temperature is expected to be +1 degrees.

Finland recorded its lowest temperature of the century early on Friday, recording -44.3 degrees Celsius just after 2 a.m. in Enontekio in Finnish Lapland.
