The Scottish cousins of Denmark’s new queen have openly acknowledged the rise of Crown Prince Mary.
Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, 51, was born in Australia to Scottish parents and has a very modest background.
The future Queen’s family hails from the fishing village of East Lothian, where many of her immediate family still live.
Sandra Flockhart, Mary’s former cousin, said: “We were devastated when we saw on the news that Queen Margrethe was abdicating.

“It still hasn’t fully sunk in that we have such a close relationship with the soon-to-be Queen of Denmark. This is great news and we are very grateful to her father, my cousin John. I’m very happy for him. He would be very proud.”
“Mary is a lovely girl, always smiling and happy to talk to everyone. She has no grace or grace.”
Mr Flockhart added: “The last time I saw her was a few months before she got married in 2004. She came to Portseton and looked around and saw my mother, who I was very close with. I visited my great-aunt Margaret.
“She came to our backyard for a quick chat and went to the harbor to see where her father’s family kept their fishing boats.

“My mother was invited to Denmark for the wedding and it was one of the highlights of her life. She talked about it for the rest of the day.
“She sat at the front, not far from the Queen, and then at dinner she sat next to Sir Roger Moore. It was truly spectacular.
“When she came back we all went to the bowling club and watched the ceremony on the big screen.

“Mary’s family were very well known in Portseton and everyone wished her well.
“My mother was always on the phone to Australia and Mary went to visit her family several times before moving to Denmark. “My mother loved Mary very much and it was her connection to Scotland.
“Everything feels a million miles away from our lives here in Portseton. We’re just ordinary working-class people.”
Another cousin, Winifred Brown, told the Mail: “I was holidaying in Blackpool when I found out Mary was going to be queen. It was a huge shock.
Crown Princess Mary is originally from Australia, but her parents are Scottish.

Queen Margrethe II will officially abdicate the throne on January 14, leaving her son Crown Prince Frederick and his wife Mary as the new monarch.
