Man detained on suspicion of leading criminal organization in Ireland and abroad

A DUBLIN man has been detained after being charged by gardaí with directing the activities of a criminal group in Ireland and outside the state.

David Callaghan, 27, of Harlerone Park, Clondalkin, was arrested at another address in west Dublin on Wednesday morning.

This follows an investigation by the Garda National Drugs and Organized Crime Bureau.

He was taken to Ronanstown Garda Station and charged under section 71A of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 with directing the activities of a criminal organization within and outside the State between April 2021 and February 2022.

Gardaí then produced Mr Callaghan before Judge David McHugh at Blanchardstown District Court.

Detective Garda Gavin Curran gave evidence that Mr Callaghan “failed to respond to the charges despite caution” and was given a copy of the charge sheet.

Detective Garda Callan added that due to the nature of the charges Mr Callaghan would have to apply to the High Court for bail.

Defense lawyer Wayne Kenny said that was correct and confirmed that the district court had no jurisdiction.

Callahan has not yet issued a plea but remained silent during the proceedings.

Detective Garda Curran also told the judge there would be an application under the provisions of the Bail Act.

The cited section requires defendants to provide a complete statement, including personal information such as income and property ownership.

The judge said GNDOCB officials had notified the defense, who would then contact the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The court heard the charges were premeditated crimes, but Wednesday’s hearing did not specify a final trial venue.

No further evidence was presented.

Judge McHugh remanded the defendant to appear in Cloverhill District Court on Friday.
