Paddy Conaghan, from Arranmore Island, County Donegal, has embarked on a ‘Ducking and Diving’ charity swimming challenge, swimming in lakes in each of Ireland’s 32 counties.
Paddy Conaghan, 83, from County Donegal, has made a great start to 2024 as he prepares for his latest incredible feat, braving the lakes of 32 counties in Ireland.
Estimated to last six weeks, Paddy’s aptly named ‘Duck and Drive across an Irish loch for IMNDA’ challenge will see Conaghan take on the challenge on behalf of various charities. This is the third consecutive year.
All funds raised this year will go to people living with motor neurone disease and their families.
Paddy was given a birthday cake at Lough Gill on his 83rd birthday.
Conaghan began his challenge on Sunday, January 7, at Lough Eamnay, Arranmore Island, and continued his second day at Lough Gill, County Leitrim, on Monday, coinciding with his 83rd birthday.
His travel destinations include Sligo, Achill and Doolough in County Mayo.
Commenting on his latest adventure, Paddy said: “I’m excited to once again take on this exciting challenge of swimming across a number of lakes across 32 counties in support of IMNDA.”
“It’s not easy and it’s bitterly cold, but the generous support of donors and well-wishers motivates me to make a real difference to the lives of people fighting MND,” Paddy said. Ta.

Paddy is inviting supporters and well-wishers to join him at various lakes across the country to support him in his bold endeavors.

Last year, Paddy raised €104,400 for mental health charities in his last attempt and was named Man of the Year by the World Open Water Swimming Association.
The World Open Water Swimming Association, a US-based organization, recognizes the outstanding achievements of open water swimmers around the world.
