Establishment of new nuclear research center in Denmark

Must read

After maintaining its expertise in the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear technology, DTU is establishing a new interdisciplinary center for the study of nuclear technology research.

The new division will be called DTU Nuclear Energy Technology and will be led by Bent Lauritzen, senior research scientist at DTU Physics. Associated research institutes such as DTU Physics, DTU Energy, DTU Chemistry and DTU Construct will collaborate on this project.

The research center will aim to attract and support academic talent to enhance research in nuclear technology. Expand the ability to teach and supervise students, including doctoral students. Create experimental facilities for areas such as materials characterization and simulation of new nuclear reactor technologies. Strengthen cooperation with Danish and international companies.

DTU President Anders Bjarkleff said: “The climate crisis has reached a level where it is extremely important to study all technologies that may be relevant for phasing out fossil energy sources.” It is important that DTU conducts research in this area, because regardless of whether there is a future in nuclear power in Denmark, DTU has an obligation to contribute research-based knowledge to society and to its students. Our goal with the creation of the new center is to strengthen the part of our research specifically aimed at nuclear energy technology. ”

Denmark currently has three research reactors that began operation between 1957 and 1960, the most notable of which is the Riso National Laboratory.

It is now part of the DTU and known as the Riso National Institute for Sustainable Energy.

Although Litho’s fission research has ceased, research into nuclear fusion continues, and the Hevesy Laboratory is equipped with a cyclotron used to produce radioactive isotopes.

Denmark is an inappropriate destination for advances in nuclear research. In 1985, Denmark’s parliament passed a resolution not to build nuclear power plants in the country, but there are currently no plans to end this situation.
