Denmark’s unprecedented move: handing over the entire artillery to Ukraine
MUNICH, Germany – In a bold and unprecedented move, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced at the Munich Security Conference that she would move all of her country’s artillery to Ukraine. The decision comes as Ukraine faces severe shortages of personnel and ammunition on the front lines.
A call to action for Europe
Frederiksen criticized the lack of sense of crisis among European delegations regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He stressed that Europe has existing stockpiles of weapons, ammunition and air defense systems that can and should be shared with Ukraine.
“This is not just a question of production, because we have weapons, ammunition and air defense that we do not need to use ourselves at the moment, but should be delivered to Ukraine.”
The Danish Prime Minister called on other European countries to follow Denmark’s lead and donate their available resources to support Ukraine.
Overcoming production challenges and speeding up support
Addressing concerns about production constraints, Frederiksen noted that Europe had succeeded in rapidly inventing and producing coronavirus vaccines during the pandemic. She expressed her confidence that a similar feat could be achieved in weapons production to support Ukraine.
“We need to increase speed and scale.”
Frederiksen acknowledged that the decision to provide military assistance should not be taken lightly, but stressed that the current situation in Ukraine requires swift action.
The Danish Prime Minister’s announcement highlighted the growing recognition among European leaders that further steps need to be taken to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. As the war enters its third year, calls for greater transatlantic support for Kiev are louder than ever.
With Denmark setting an example by donating an entire cannon, other European countries could soon follow suit, providing much-needed relief to Ukrainian troops on the front lines.
