Afghanistan won by 7 wickets in the first Test match between the two teams in 2019.

Matthew Foster could make his Ireland debut after being selected for the Test and one-day national squad for the multi-format series against Afghanistan.

Test matches will begin the series from February 28, before three ODIs and three Twenty20 matches in the United Arab Emirates.

Barry McCarthy, Theo van Woolkom and Craig Young could also make their Test debuts for Ireland.

Andrew Balbirnie will captain the Test team, while Paul Stirling will lead the ODI and T20 teams.

Uncapped Foster, 24, is a pace bowler who has represented national teams CSNI and Northern Knights.

“We have played a lot of cricket in this area over the last 10 years so the conditions should be somewhat familiar to the players,” Ireland selector Andrew White said.

“After a 12-week gap, the team should bring confidence and momentum into this series from the success of their tour to Zimbabwe in December.

“Preparations are progressing well and the team had a solid training camp in Spain last week and we will be sending the players to the UAE five days before the next series to acclimate and train to the Middle East environment.”

“This series is crucial in the preparation for a big summer that includes the T20 World Cup. This is always a highly anticipated contest and I expect this to be a hard-fought contest. I’m really looking forward to it.” “
