An all-Ireland consortium comprising Tes-Caw JV, Farance and Acom, has signed a deal for early involvement in upgrading Northern Ireland (NI) Water’s assets. Obtained.
NI Water has awarded an initial contractor engagement agreement to a consortium for the upgrade of the Kinnegar wastewater treatment plant and the construction of the new Sydenham wastewater pumping station.
The appointed team will work with NI Water and project managers from RPS and Atkins Réalis to deliver a state-of-the-art new pumping station in Sydenham and a major upgrade to the Kinnegar sewage treatment facility on the edge of Holywood. We seek to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for .
Upgrading these assets is part of NI Water’s Living with Water Plan in Belfast. The plan includes major upgrades to five wastewater treatment facilities in Belfast, Kinnegar, Whitehouse, Carrickfergus and Green Island. All these places are located near Belfast Lake.
These projects also plan major network improvements.
NI Water hopes that, once fully funded, the refurbishment will safeguard the future operation of the treatment plant, which will support all aspects of daily life. In addition, the upgrade will improve water quality in the River Lagan and Belfast Lake, and increase the capacity of each treatment plant to accommodate new homes.
Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd said: “We welcome this partnership, which represents an important step in the development of these two strategic projects. They form an integral part of the Water Living Plan in Belfast, which will ensure that communities are not flooded. with the aim of providing a long-term approach to drainage and wastewater management, to protect against water pollution, provide a cleaner, greener environment and ensure the wider Belfast region remains open. Business and Investment.
“This research will help design the most effective and efficient solutions for these critical wastewater infrastructure assets.”
Sarah Venning, chief executive of NI Water, said: “NI Water is delighted to have appointed this expert team for the major refurbishment of Kinegar and the construction of the new Sydenham, allowing us to take further progress towards delivering our ambitious Belfast Water Living Plan ”.
“These industry experts, with many years of experience in the water sector in Ireland and further afield, will work together as ‘one team’ to develop the project under contract with NI Water and local project management consultants RPS and Atkins Réalis. We will proceed. A thoughtful, sustainable and robust solution that will ensure these major NI Water assets support a thriving environment and growing economy for decades to come.
“As part of the critical early contractor engagement phase, One Team will progress the project through the relevant planning processes and engage with stakeholders on future proposals.”
Mr Venning continued about the wider Belfast Water Living Plan and the strategic need for these upgrades: “Investment constraints over the past 20 years have meant that many parts of the sewage and drainage infrastructure serving large areas of Belfast are now under pressure to operate or exceed their original design capacity. NI Water is working hard to ensure it meets current Northern Ireland Environment Agency standards, but the full implementation of the Belfast Water Life Plan will depend on the city’s long-term sewage needs. It’s essential to securing a solution.”
