A new exhibition featuring the work of Northern Ireland’s female artists is set to open in London.
‘Visions of the Future: Young Women Artists of Northern Ireland’ was organized by the Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool.
The exhibition, which focuses on the talents of recently graduated female artists from the North, opens on February 1st at the Irish Cultural Center in Hammersmith, London.
This program will introduce the voices of a new generation of women in Northern Ireland who have grown up in a post-conflict society that is recovering after decades of violence.
The Irish Institute at the University of Liverpool has developed a strong track record of providing Irish and Northern Irish artists with a platform to promote their work.
However, Institute Director Professor Pete Sharlow revealed the importance of showcasing the work of female artists, given that their work is underrepresented in exhibitions.
“Inclusiveness”
“The Institute challenges the invisibility of communities and groups. Despite there being as many women involved in art production as men, around 80 per cent of galleries have more male than female artists. “We are organizing an exhibition that focuses on women, given that there are more artists,” he said.
“The funding from Ulster University’s Department of Foreign Affairs and the support of the Irish Cultural Center is greatly appreciated, especially as they support our vision of inclusivity and the need to provide a space to redress the reality of inadequate support for careers. I’m very grateful for the sharing.” It’s about women artists who should no longer be working on the fringes. ”
The exhibition was curated by Belfast’s ArtisAnn Gallery, which has a reputation for supporting emerging and graduate artists.
Gallery co-owner Dr Anne McVeigh praised the incredible quality of the works on display.
“We believe we can encourage young and up-and-coming artists and believe that they are the stars of the future,” she said.
“The artwork produced by these newcomers is remarkable both for its technical ability and the breadth of new ideas.
“This very diverse show has two things in common: they are all new graduates, they are all of the highest quality, and they give every indication that they will be the ‘names’ of the future. ”
The exhibition will be open for free viewing until March 29th, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
