Former USA national team assistant manager Anthony Hudson has been approached by the FAI as part of the ongoing search for a new Ireland manager, Gavin Cooney told today’s Football Family podcast.
Cooney, the 42’s football journalist, said this shows the association is approaching this process with perhaps more creativity than many realize.
Hudson is currently the manager of Al Malhiyah in Qatar.
Mr Cooney said he had been criticized for “thinking outside the box”, touting Neil Lennon and Chis Coleman as possible replacements for Lee Carsley, who has been a long-time target of the FAI.
“To be fair to the FAI, I think there was that (creativity),” Cooney said. “Whether I end up being a candidate or not… Probably not, but I was the assistant manager for the U.S. team at the last World Cup and led New Zealand very close to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. I know they were talking to a guy named Anthony Hudson.
“So they spoke to him twice. He is currently off the list and last night they told him he would not be the next Ireland manager.”
“But I think it’s interesting because it’s about a process that has been shrouded in mystery for the last 13 weeks or so.”
Mr Cooney added: “Just the fact that they found this guy that I had never heard of was enough to make me say, ‘Wait a minute, you probably know that the idea that the FAI is putting into this is not necessarily a gamble. It’s not just about the content,’ he added. list”. . Perhaps there is a level of creativity and exploration that has not been publicly acknowledged. ”
