The last See You In Hell club event of 2023 was held at the end of the year. Three Finnish underground death metal bands graced the Bar Loose Club stage. While his first two bands showcased the up-and-coming talent of the Finnish death metal scene, the night’s headliner, Partenance, focused on the older generation of his early 90s Finnish death metal scene. Ta. See You In Hell is organized in collaboration with Helsinki Metal Festival and aims to showcase the diverse genres of the Finnish metal scene during a club event. The series will continue in his 2024 year, with a line-up of intriguing names appearing on the same club stage.
The night started with an energetic performance from a new death metal group called Malformed. This youthful death squad has led Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen to name one of their EPs as his one of his personal favorite death metal releases of 2023. It received a huge boost at the time. His four-piece band had a tight, brutal sound with obvious death metal influences. They bring the same level of brutality to their music as old death metal legends. It felt like a throwback to the early ’90s, when young, fierce musicians took to the stage and unleashed savage brutality. Malformed is expected to make a strong impact with their debut album, promising the ultimate death metal experience.
The second act featured Disguised Malignance featuring the guitarist from Malformed. Disguised malignancy essentially belonged to the same school of thought as malformed. The frontman displayed a well-educated and professionally trained approach in leading the band, skillfully engaging and directing the audience. The bassist, on the other hand, provided a masterclass in playing ability, clearly drawing inspiration from legendary bassists of the extreme metal genre such as Alex Webster and Steve DiGiorgio. “Disguided Malignance” was, as expected, extremely tight and brutal sounding. They never failed with their instruments. Just a tight and killer live band. Having witnessed two youthful death metal bands, with members still in their 20s, it’s safe to say that death metal is in capable hands. The future of this art form looks promising. wonderful.
Partenance introduced the old school generation of the Finnish death metal scene from more than 30 years ago. Although there have been some changes to the lineup, the current configuration has proven to be a very lethal combination. The band delivered a surprisingly raw set with an extremely brutal and nihilistic sound. The five-piece ensemble delivered a solid hour of pure death metal without ever losing its grip or descending into sloppiness. Current vocalist Aabeg Gautam has seamlessly integrated into Purtenance’s savage soundworld. The Finnish death metal veterans released a set featuring both old and new tracks, including classics like “Deep Blue Darkness.” Gautam’s vocals blended brutally well with Parthenance’s aggressive musical atmosphere, turning the front area into a raging pit. Despite the hellish temperatures, Partenance’s old school death metal was perfect and skull-crushing as this kind of metal should sound.
