- Republic of Ireland’s ‘chronically flawed’ defense capabilities could leave the UK vulnerable
Britain should strengthen its military presence in Northern Ireland to prevent hostile states from using it as a “back door” to attack Britain, a report today warns.
The Republic of Ireland’s “chronically flawed” defenses could leave the country vulnerable to attack, research backed by former Conservative and Labor defense secretaries says, think tank Policy Exchange has found. He warns.
The report accuses Dublin of having a “permanent hostage” to UK and NATO defense forces, thereby exposing the country to a growing “backdoor threat”. .
The report calls on the government to strengthen its naval and air force presence in Northern Ireland to deter the growing Russian threat off Ireland’s Atlantic coast, where vital undersea cables reach the British Isles.
In a foreword to today’s report, former Defense Secretary Sir Michael Fallon and former NATO chief Lord Robertson warned that the time has come to “reaffirm the strategic importance of Ireland, and in particular Northern Ireland, to the UK’s national security”.
