Callie Hannah chasing All-Ireland glory – The Sideline Eye

Must read

For the first time ever, Curriehanna will be surrounded by Croke Park on the final day of the All-Ireland. And they deserve to be here.

True, they sometimes got lucky. The narrow one-point wins over Pomeroy and Ballyhayes were nerve-wracking experiences.

They had to put their lives on the line against Allenwood just last weekend to get to this stage of the competition.

But this Kalihana team has always shown a willingness to fight for everything, no matter what. Resilience that will surely endure.

They have a quality that rivals many senior teams around the country, but what stands out is their determination.

Aidan Nugent, who essentially played on one foot in the Ulster final, failed to score throughout the match.

But it was a defense-slicing pass to Pierce Casey that led to the winning score and propelled Cullihana to glory. Resilience.

Mickey Murray missed a lot of games in recent years, but returned perfectly and commanded the defence. Resilience.

Gary Mackin made his first campaign start last weekend and did his job admirably. Resilience.

This bunch of Calliehanna are showing all the trademarks of a champion and are 60 minutes away from winning the biggest prize.

Please come tomorrow afternoon at lunch time. Forty Curriehana clubmen gather in the Croke Park dressing room.

All the clubmen, all fighting for the badge, all doing it for the love of the jersey and for the people of Curriehanna.

It’s a special occasion and a special day, but unfortunately, it’s not just a matter of being present. They had a difficult task ahead of them as they waltzed across the hollow lawn.

Sil na Martra is led by John Evans, an experienced manager with many years experience of such important days.

Their most famous son, Noel O’Leary, is part of the management team. If they are anything like his type of player, Kalihana will be up against them.

But as they have shown, they are good at combining it and Croke Park’s wide, open spaces suit Stephen Leal’s men.

Everything will depend on the day, and Kariehanna will need to perform at her best to come out on top. And even if this could end up being a showdown, they have enough fight to get through.
