Over the next three years, Williams will co-teach an international virtual exchange class with faculty from the University of Tampere in Finland and travel to Finland for two weeks each spring with students.

This course, Crime and Justice, explores the question, “Why do people commit crimes?” We aim to enable students to apply criminological theory to real-world practice. During their trip abroad, students visit a Finnish prison and compare Europe’s rehabilitative prison system with the United States’ punitive prison system.

“It is an honor and privilege to represent the School of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences and the University as the only sociology, anthropology and criminal justice educator selected to this cohort of the Fulbright Specialist Program,” said Williams. Stated. “This grant and the international experience it provides will provide students with a valuable opportunity to develop cultural competency and apply what they learn in class to real-world situations.”
