Holly Williams, a lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice, has been accepted into the Fulbright Specialist Program and has been awarded a three-year grant from the Fulbright Finland Foundation.

Over the next three years, Williams will co-teach an international virtual exchange class with faculty from the University of Tampere in Finland and travel to Finland for two weeks each spring with students.

This course, Crime and Justice, explores the question, “Why do people commit crimes?” We aim to enable students to apply criminological theory to real-world practice. During their trip abroad, students visit a Finnish prison and compare Europe’s rehabilitative prison system with the United States’ punitive prison system.

“It is an honor and privilege to represent the School of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences and the University as the only sociology, anthropology and criminal justice educator selected to this cohort of the Fulbright Specialist Program,” said Williams. Stated. “This grant and the international experience it provides will provide students with a valuable opportunity to develop cultural competency and apply what they learn in class to real-world situations.”

Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology and a bachelor’s degree in law from Lincoln University. She holds a master’s degree in human resources development and is currently a doctoral candidate in policy studies with an emphasis on homeland defense at Clemson University.
