“By Thursday morning, temperatures will be 15 to 25 degrees below zero in the southern region,” said Yale meteorologist Elias Paakkanen.
According to Eel’s forecast, the next few days will be very cold in most parts of Finland.
Cold air has already arrived in Northern Karelia, with temperatures around -30 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning. The central region was also cold, at least compared to the relatively mild weather of February.
Eel meteorologists say a precipitation system kept southern regions from getting too cold on Wednesday, but that could change. Elias Pakanen.
“It will be 15 to 25 degrees below zero in the southern region on Thursday morning,” Päkanen said, adding that cloud cover made it unclear what would happen to coastal areas.
He said temperatures in central Finland on Thursday morning would be between -20C and -30C. It will be even colder in Kainuu and Oulu, North Karelia, with temperatures ranging from -25 to -35 degrees.
In Lapland, temperatures at the beginning of the day can be expected to be between -20 and -30 degrees.
However, the weather can be a little milder if it’s sunny.
Over the next few days, temperatures will be at their lowest on Thursday and Friday, but conditions in the Arctic could ease slightly over the weekend.
Paakkanen said there are many reasons for the frigid temperatures, including natural fluctuations in the weather and the polar vortex.
The polar vortex is a powerful wind system high in the stratosphere that can have a significant impact on weather conditions in Finland.
“The center of the polar vortex is moving a little closer to Finland, so the cold air is reaching us more easily,” Paakkanen said, adding that this kind of cold wave could last for quite a while. added.
