On Sunday, January 14th, the current ruler, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, will abdicate and a new king and queen will be sworn in.
On New Year’s Eve, Queen Margrethe II announced that she would abdicate the throne, that her son Crown Prince Frederik would become King Frederik X, and that his wife, Crown Princess Mary, would be known as Queen Mary.
Unlike Charles III’s coronation, the Danish royal family will opt for a simpler ceremony. Instead of a formal coronation ceremony, a proclamation ceremony will be held at Copenhagen’s Christiansborg Palace on January 14, exactly 52 years since Margrethe’s coronation.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will announce the royal couple at the palace, and the two will appear on the balcony in front of the public.
A special cannon salute marks the occasion, and the national flag is lowered and raised again at the Royal Palace.
Ahead of the unveiling of the new monarchy on the Balcony, in addition to Queen Margrethe, the new King and Queen will also join the Danish government to formalize the transfer of power, which the Queen is expected to sign as Secretary of State in the Council of State. The royal family will also take part in a special parliamentary session on January 15th and a celebratory service at Aarhus Cathedral on Sunday, January 21st.
Royal festivities will begin in Denmark at noon on January 14, at approximately 7:30 a.m. ET. There will be no television coverage of this event, but many news outlets will provide live coverage throughout the day.
Newly appointed King Frederick is also scheduled to address the nation, after which the King and Queen will host an event with a small number of guests.
Another attendee is Frederick’s younger brother, Prince Joachim of Denmark, who will attend his mother’s abdication ceremony without his wife and children, nearly two years after they were stripped of their royal titles.

Last year, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie immigrated to the United States just nine months after the king stripped the prince’s four children, Nikolai, Felix, Henrik and Athena, of the title “His Royal Highness.”
Queen Margrethe’s second son had Count Henrik and Countess Athena with Marie, and her eldest sons Count Felix and Count Nicholas with his first wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.
At the time, Queen Margrethe apologized to families left “sad” by her decision.
“In recent days there has been a strong reaction to my decision regarding the future use of titles for Prince Joachim’s four children. Of course it affects me,” she wrote.
“My decision has been a long time coming. After 50 years on the throne, it is only natural to look back and look to the future. It is my duty and desire as Queen to do so.”
She continued, “Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions and finding the right time is always difficult.”
